About Us
Old Boardgamers Blog was established with the idea that while gamers may grow old we’re all still kids inside. Started in 2008 as a personal blog OBGB has grown into a space on the web for news, commentary and excellent reviews on the hobby we all love. OBGB will continue to grow in the coming months with a single purpose in mind… Entertainment. We want our readers and our staff to enjoy every minute they spend on this site.
Dan Spezzano – EIC (boardgame geek handle: dspezzano)
I’ve been gaming for 34 years and have been covering games since my first article appeared in Computer Gaming World Magazine when I was thirteen years old. I’ve since written for countless web sites, been a play tester for both electronic and board games. I’m also working on several game designs that I hope to one day publish.
On the board gaming front I’m not a big Euro fan. My interests tend to lead to games with lots of pieces that take hours to play. I’m also the father of two little girls who I am slowly convincing that gaming is more then a Nintendo DS.
My Top 5 Games I would play in a second are: Combat Commander, 7 Wonders, Summoner Wars, Twillight Struggle and any of the new D&D board games.
Todd Doyle (board game geek handle: tmdba37)
Mr. Doyle is a marketing professional for a large Telecommunications Company who has always had a knack for writing and a quick wit. His number one hobby is playing games and has had an ongoing love affair with board games since his first game of Axis and Allies with his older brother as a 9-year old in 1984. He’s been contributing to the OGBG since March 2011.
Always a fan of long and drawn out war games, he also doesn’t mind the occasional brain-busting or fun-paced Euro. “I’ll likely play whatever hits the table, but there are a few games (like Die Macher, Age of Steam and Show Manager) that I’d certainly place over some others.”
His current Top 5 Games are: Battlestar Galactica (w/expansions), Civ—the Board Game, Tribune, 7 Wonders and 1960: The Making of a President
Chris Aniballi (boardgame geek handle: thesolargarlic)
In the strange ways that geeks evolve, I somehow leveled up from a childhood of family games and Risk to my teens of D&D to and early 20’s of Magic to a late 20’s Euro board games to my current level 36 multi-class Euro / Ameritrash / Card / Casual Gamer. Currently 16 years active in my local game club, where lately I’m been doing everything possible to force people into games of Civilization.
I also game at home with my girlfriend and a great group of (mostly) RPGers I’m slowly trying to turn into board gamers. Like Dan, I’ve had a few ideas rattling around in my head for The Perfect Game Design that I hope one day to have the force of will to complete.
New favorites: Civilization (FFG), 7 Wonders, Planet Steam, Mansions of Madness, Dominion.
All-time favorites: Age of Steam, Arkham Horror, Shogun (Queen Games), Doomtown CCG, Struggle of Empires
